Deus Ex is an early example of an immersive sim, because it lets you stack boxes to get out of bounds

An immersive sim is a genre of videogame in which you play in first person and you can pick up and move boxes in order to solve a problem. Sometimes you have to put points into box lifting, but if you can lift and move a box to solve a problem, and you play from a first person perspective, the game is an immersive sim.

History

Once upon a time there was a prospector named Warren who became trapped inside a gold mine after a collapse. Unable to escape, he attempted to use crates of mining supplies in order to reach a vent, so that he could escape. While he managed to stack the boxes successfully, his tower toppled and he was crushed under their weight, killing him instantly.

Years later a video game company would be build atop the abandoned mineshaft. The ghost of Warren, now named Warren Specter, haunted the video game company, and would roam up and down the corridors screaming about stacking boxes. The developers at the company decided to make an interactive box stacking simulation game in his memory, in hopes this would calm his soul. Because they are played from a first person perspective, they are immersive. SIM is an acronym for Sokoban Is Mechanics.

The new game idea was a hit, but it was unsuccessful in exorcising the spirit. Some say he haunts the abandoned videogame offices to this day.
