== Early Life ==

The first European to document the islands of San Francisco Bay was Spanish naval officer and explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala during Spanish rule of California; he charted San Francisco Bay in 1775. He named today's Yerba Buena Island as ''"La Isla de los Alcatraces"'', which translates as "The Island of the Gannets" but is commonly believed to translate as "The Island of the Pelicans" (the modern Spanish word for 'pelican' is ''pelícano''), from the archaic Spanish ''alcatraz'' ("pelican"). There are no gannets native to the Pacific coast, making the older Spanish usage more likely.

The Rock was inherited by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1934, who began to operate it as a maximum security prison. The infamous Yakuza Boss, Al Capone, was incarcerated at the facility until he got syphilis. Yeah, hey did you know for real that Al Capone died of neurosyphilis complications? Ain't that just the shit huh.

On December 12, 2003, dangerous criminals Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, known members of the notorious gang, the [[Mythbusters]], escaped from Alcatraz on live television. The event was a massive blow to the reputation of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the organization promptly closed the facility to save face. All remaining prisoners were given a gun with 6 bullets and released onto the streets of San Francisco.
